While I Was Painting a Tornado

An artwork completed before the storm and a coincidence that changed its meaning.

The Original Artwork

Created just weeks before the tornado of August 14, 2026, this original drawing would take on an entirely unexpected significance.

 The Story Behind the Edition

For the last year, I have been drawing, painting, photographing and creating video of tornadoes as part of Becoming Eros, exploring the form as an expression of life force, complexity, movement and intensity.

Shortly after completing this drawing, a tornado struck my home and garden, causing extensive damage. At the exact time the storm passed through, I was in my Chicago studio painting a large-scale tornado and filming the process.

The collision between imagery and lived experience has opened a new chapter in Becoming Eros, one I am only beginning to explore.
